Mayor’s Skills Legacy Programme

Runners warming up

PlaySport London: Skills Investment Programme is part of the Mayor’s commitment to deliver a sporting legacy from the 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games.

The programme is an integral part of a ‘A Sporting Future for London’, the Mayor’s plan which aims to get more people active in sport, strengthen sporting infrastructure in the capital, build capacity and skills and strengthen delivery. The plan sets out four key goals:

  • Get more people active
  • Transform the sporting infrastructure
  • Build capacity and skills
  • Maximise the benefits of sport to our society

Led by the National Skills Academy for Sport and Active Leisure, the programme delivers a training and development investment initiative that will build the capacity and skills of Londoners working and volunteering in the sports sector in the lead up to, and beyond the 2010 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games.

To deliver this vision the right people, with the right skills and qualifications must be in place.

The programme of activity aims to:

Support the growth and sustainability of local sports clubs by:

  • Recruiting new sports coaches and officials
  • Upskilling existing sports coaches and officials
  • Upskilling sports club operational staff

Increase the number of Londoners volunteering in sport by:

  • Helping local sports clubs to identify volunteer opportunities
  • Helping local volunteer centres to promote sports clubs volunteer vacancies
  • Recruiting participants from sports clubs to complete volunteer managers training
  • Targeting under represented groups as sports volunteers.

Recruit, retain and upskill the workforce (both voluntary and paid) by:

  • Upskilling both paid and unpaid employees in management, supervisory and leadership skills
  • Upskilling both paid and unpaid employees in customer service skills
  • Recruiting and upskilling health 'activators'
  • Upskilling employees to enable them to work more effectively with people with a disability
  • Recruiting more people with disabilities into the sector in either a voluntary or paid capacity.
