NGB Volunteer Manager's Meeting - 11 June 2010

The next meeting takes place on 25 November 2010 in central London

The Sport England Joint Adult and Children and Young People Volunteering Meeting, held on 11 June 2010, brought together representatives from governing bodies, volunteering and Sport England to discuss a range of volunteering issues related to adults and young people.

There were a number of presentations, workshops and discussions throughout the day, the details of which can be found below.

Funded partners and programmes presentations

Presentations were made by each of our national funded partners and programme leads:

Volunteering pathways workshop

The volunteering pathways workshop asked attendees to think about:

  1. What volunteer roles they need now and in the future to grow their sport
  2. What they had in place to train, develop, nurture, encourage and retain their volunteers
  3. What pathways exist for:
    - Specific volunteer roles (e.g. coaching)
    - Young people as they transition from education into employment or from school into higher or further education and then employment
  4. How adult volunteers find volunteering opportunities in your sport
  5. How volunteers know what they need to know to do each role

The workshop included two downloadable presentations :

A template was circulated and attendees started to write down their existing pathways.

A Volunteer Pathways Action Plan template was circulated and attendees started to complete this. It would be great if these action plans could be shared with us, (however sketchy they are), so that we can understand where you currently are with this thinking and so that we can identify where you may need support in the future. Please send them to Anne Clark

runningsports workshop

The second workshop was on runningsports, a Sport England support package for sports volunteers and volunteer managers.

Afternoon workshops

The afternoon began with a brief overview of opportunities on the horizon, including;

  • The increasing intelligence Sport England holds on sports participants, latent demand and segmentation
  • The world we live in – technology, communication tailored to individual preferences and profiles, pressures on time affecting adults and young people
  • The need to offer a variety of ways of engagement – one-off volunteering, blocks of volunteering, specific projects etc.

The remainder of the afternoon was spent in small workshops, the topics included;

  • Communicating with volunteers
  • NGB volunteer strategies and consulting volunteers
  • Volunteer mentoring and buddying
  • Data collection
  • Maximising oppportunities arising with London 2012
  • Rebranding volunteer roles
  • Demonstrating the value of volunteers
  • Youth forums

Maximising London 2012

Katie Jackson from Youthnet, part of volunteering organisation 'Do-it', presented an outline of the Volunteer England and Youthnet programme - Games Inspired Volunteering Opportunities.

Holly Hart from RFU Women is engaged in Do-it and has seen some excellent benefits of engaging volunteers outside of her sport.

Customer feedback

Completed evaluations from the day provided us with great steer on potential future topics - it also provided us with details on what worked and what didn't and where we could make improvements – 94% of attendees rated the event as good or excellent.

What’s next, how can you benefit?

We recognise that every NGB has different capacity levels and is at a different stage of volunteer development, so take your pick of one or more of the following options:

  • Contact your relevant Sport England volunteering contact. If you are not already in touch, then check the list of sports and specialities for each relationship manager
  • Complete your volunteer pathway and send it to anne.clark@sportengland.org  by 13 September, depending where you are on volunteer development we can support its completion, identify gaps and solutions or share it as good practice
  • Complete the Best Practice and Top Three Priorities Form to give us a better picture of your priorities and what you would like to see covered in the next meeting. Please return  to alexandra.moore@sportengland.org by 13 September.

Next meeting

The next NGB Volunteer Managers Meeting is on 25 November 2010 and will be held at Sport England, Victoria House, London. WC1B 4SE.

An agenda will follow once we have received your completed Best Practice and Top 3 Priorities Forms.
