Local government spends approximately £1 billion per year on sport and leisure.
Sport England has always worked closely with local authorities to help them develop sport in their area. And we will continue to do so as we deliver our strategy for 2013-2017.
Our team of local government experts - who work nationally and locally - provide advocacy, advice and support to local councils. We recognise that investment in sport has to work harder and be relevant to wider objectives. The need to deliver transformational change through developing new ways of working and innovative approaches will be key to sustaining sporting opportunities in local communities.
Our support includes:
- a range of tools, publications and guidance to help local authorities increase the quantity and quality of opportunities to take part in sport.
- brokering relationships to help national governing bodies and local councils work together and reach shared goals.
- promoting joint investment opportunities, especially where councils have a clear strategic commitment to sport and leisure.
