NGBs enter the Dragon's Den

In  May 2011 Sport England hosted a special ‘Dragon’s Den’ style event for NGBs to pitch on their products, programmes or opportunities that might be of interest to the HE sector.   

Eighteen NGBs pitched to 60 representatives from 40 universities on opportunities to help enhance the student and staff sports participation offers at their institutions, as well as ways of improving local community engagement in sport.  

The day was a real success with both NGBS and universities providing positive feedback

Sport  Synopsis  Presentations
Athletics

The England Athletics offer focuses on participation programmes, including Run England and Gold Challenge, and club/network support including student placements, facilities and development.

Badminton

Learn about No Strings for students - semi-structured, informal and fun Badminton sessions, and also HE Badminton Officers - providing student / graduate opportunities with work experience included.

 

Baseball and softball

Baseball Softball UK’s offer includes taster sessions, coach development and support at sessions, plus promotional materials and equipment are available.

Basketball

IM Basketball is a free resource designed by young people for young people and provides everything needed to run a Basketball competition in five easy steps.  It can be played in a range of formats and is adaptable and flexible.

Cricket

Easy Cricket – easy to play, easy to set up, easy to organise, simple rules and can be played indoors or outdoors.  Watch a live demonstration to see just how easy it is!

 

Fencing

Learn about ‘Go Fence’ and watch a live demonstration.  Go Fence is British Fencing’s introduction to the sport using plastic and foam kit.  It could be used at universities as a promotional tool for the Fencing club perhaps at a Fresher’s Fair, as part of an active lifestyles programme, intramural sports competitions and more.

 

Football

Hear from the The FA on Just Play! - the brand for the partnership between The FA and Mars which aims to increase adult participation in football.  It is fun and informal, unstructured but organised, aims to help players resuming or enhancing a footballing journey – and it’s ‘jumpers for goalposts!’

 

Gymnastics

Gym Fusion is a new National Festivals Programme, which involves all disciplines of gymnastics in a more social, fun and enjoyable setting.  It has been developed in response to research undertaken with students into the reasons why they drop-out of the sport.  Gym Fusion aims to provide an alternative to competition and a new route into gymnastics.

 

Hockey

Rush Hockey is a new format of the game – which can be played indoor or outdoor, with mixed teams of four or five, is self umpired, no goalkeepers, with just a few simple rules.  Hear how this game could appeal to students.

 

Judo

Introducing the British Judo Student Voucher Book – which aims to help students get started in Judo.  The booklet includes a free licence, free grading, four free lessons and more.  Improvements for 2011 include initial online registration, discounted renewal licence and a £6 Judo gi!

 

 

Lacrosse

Learn more about English Lacrosse’s university offer – including provision of regular coaching support to develop and retain participants, competitions for your club participants, education for your university volunteers and university to club links programmes.

 

 
Orienteering

British Orienteering explains its support to universities including developing a regular activity programme and major event opportunities.  There is also support for Active Universities projects through the mapping of campuses, permanent orienteering course offer, competition, coaching and club expansion support. 

 

Rowing

Hear from a student participant about her involvement in rowing and how your university could get more involved in both indoor and outdoor rowing through traditional competition, Gold Challenge and Explore Rowing.

 

 

Rugby union

The RFU’s offer includes various formats of the game such as O2 Touch Rugby and Investec Intramural Rugby.  The RFU will also offer support through Whole Club Development Planning and dedicated specialist student Rugby Development Staff.

Squash and racketball

Learn more about hosting a Regional endorsed graded squash event.  An events pack of support and guidance in how to put on and run an event will be provided and university clubs and students can bid to host and run the Regional tournament.  The outcome will be more opportunities for playing in a more social way and it could help clubs with income generation.

Tennis

Find out about the benefits of having a University Tennis Co-ordinator (UTC) at your institution.   The aim of the UTC programme is about creating more opportunities for students to play, compete and receive the latest training packages as volunteers or coaches.  It will also help to provide a solid grounding in the tennis industry, giving them the skills to become part of the future workforce for British Tennis.
