Team Bath netballers and University of Bath Director of Sport Ged Roddy won two of the top awards at the 2007 BBC West Sports Awards ceremony. The netballers won the coveted Team of the Year award while Ged Roddy won the award for Outstanding Contribution to West Country Sport. Team Bath and England netballers Tamsin Greenway, Pamela Cookey and Jo Binns, joined by deputy TeamBath coach Jess Garland, collected the team award on behalf of the whole squad at the star-studded ceremony in Bristol.
TeamBath received the award for an outstanding season that saw them retain the national elite Superleague title with a 100 per cent record – winning all 16 of their games. Tamsin Greenway said they were surprised to be on the shortlist for the award – and even more surprised to win the the title over the other sides on the shortlist – Bristol City football team, who won promotion to the Championship last season, and Somerset County Cricket Club, who won Division Two of the County Championship.
“We weren’t even expecting to be shortlisted, particularly given the calibre of some of the other teams in the region,” said Greenway. “It was a genuine shock to us all when it was announced that we’d won it. We all just sat there and looked at each other. It was really amazing. It shows how far netball has come, because a few years ago we wouldn’t even have been invited to an awards ceremony like that,” she added. “We’re all really pleased to have received the award.”

Ged Roddy (pictured) collected the award for Outstanding Contribution to West Country Sport, which was sponsored by AJH Graphics. Roddy joined the University of Bath as Director of Sport in 1992 and has overseen an expansion of sport that had made it one of the country’s top sport universities. He is also manager of Team Bath FC and chair of Sport England’s South West Regional Sports Board. “I was surprised and delighted by the award, and I was particularly pleased to see Team Bath’s netballers receive the recognition they deserve at the same awards ceremony,” he said. |
