Healthy Workplace Manager - Somerset County Council
Somerset County Council have taken the proactive approach of employing a Health Workplace Manager.  The aim of the appointment is to increase awareness of the benefits of physical activity, while at the same time introducing a range of activities and sports that will be available to council employees.  As a result 500 employees have taken part in the activities, which range from a health MOT, pedometer challenges, walking groups, tai chi and yoga. Walk to work – North Somerset
The introduction of new walking and cycling routes in North Somerset has significantly increased the number of people walking and cycling to work and school in the area.  The three routes, which link the town centre of Bodmin with industrial and micro-business sites on the outskirts, has greatly reduced traffic congestion as more people are hopping out of their cars. Active Workplace Manager – Ginsters Ltd
CyclistWhat started out as a healthy workplace scheme set up by Caradon District Council and piloted by Ginsters to improve the health of their employees and their families has gone on beat hundreds of entries from as far afield as China and Australia and achieve international renown by winning the 2008 World Leisure International Innovation Prize. Councillor John Turner, leader of Caradon District Council, said: “It’s fantastic to see that Cornwall can still teach the rest of the world a thing or two. This is the first time that a UK project has won the World Leisure International Innovation Prize, so it’s not just a coup for Caradon and Cornwall but also for the country as a whole....What the judges really liked about the active workplace concept is that it can be adapted for other employers and situations and is both sustainable and affordable in the long term.  If it can succeed in rural Cornwall on a modest budget for a factory that operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week, it can work anywhere. A little vision can achieve remarkable outcomes.” The judges were also impressed by the benefits that the scheme brought to the wider community, which ranged from bolstering the town’s economy and local sports clubs to helping to secure improved cycle and walkways for the surrounding area. Ginsters employed an Active Workplace Manager to implement a physical activity and sport programme within the business.  The programme aims to encourage and promote positive health choices as an integral part of the employees’ and their families. Activities introduced include a slow running club, badminton and yoga, while there are inter-departmental football matches between shifts. View case study.

Be Active 4 Life – Exeter City Council
Sport England, in partnership with The British Heart Foundation, The Department of Health, The Big Lottery Fund and Loughborough University, have assisted Exeter City Council introduce a project to promote physical activity and a healthy lifestyle to it’s employees. The project has provided the councils’ employees an opportunity to engage in a variety of activities including pilates and The British Heart Foundation Stairwell Programme.  Key to the success of this project has been the introduction of Workplace Champions, where staff based at different locations within the council take on the role of co-ordinators. Active Workplace - Weymouth and Portland Housing
Sport England has enabled Healthy Living Wessex (HLW) to work directly with Weymouth and Portland Housing, helping them to  improve the physical and mental well-being of their workforce. Healthy Living Wessex believes that the success of the project has  largely been down to the recruitment of Workplace Health Champions, staff who plan and promote the health project and activities  within the workplace. It is the champions’ enthusiasm and commitment that ensures that the company continues to offer a range of  healthy activities and events that are appealing to the workforce. Already, the company has seen a 4.5% decrease in their sickness  absence rates and an increase in the number of employees taking regular exercise. View case study.
