Wendy Houvenaghel spacer Olympian inspires local cyclists
Cornish-based Olympic cycling heroine Wendy Houvenaghel delighted local cyclists and families alike at Bissoe Bike Hire in September 2008 when she proudly showed off the silver medal she won in the Individual Pursuit in Beijing. Wendy, who lives in Bodmin, happily posed for photographs, signed autographs and answered questions about her Olympic success and her build-up to it.  It was a unique  opportunity for the many cycling enthusiasts present to meet one of the stars of the hugely successful Team GB Cycling Team and to  congratulate Wendy in person. Peter Edwards of the management team of OneandAll cycling, the  countywide cycling organisation commented:"Bissoe Bike Hire was a fitting venue for the wonderful reception organised by Richard Pascoe of Bike Chain Ricci who coached Wendy in the early days of her cycling career and now works tirelessly to promote cycling throughout the County and to help future generations of potential Olympians."

Exercise spacer Nominations invited for BBC Sports Unsung Hero 2008
Part of this year's BBC Sports Personality of the Year programme provides an opportunity to recognise the dedicated, and often voluntary, work of people who give so much of their time, effort and talent to encourage others to excel in grassroots sport. This is exactly the type of work Sport England will be focusing on under our new strategy. This award salutes the work of those people. The  fifteen local winners chosen by 15 BBC Nations and Regions will join a star-studded guest list at the Sports Personality of the Year awards ceremony at the Echo Arena in Liverpool on 14 December. Bursaries of up to £2,500, provided by award supporters Robinsons, are also available to winners of each regional award to help them with their work in sport and the community. So if you know someone in your area who goes an extra mile to change the lives of others through sport and deserves recognition, the BBC want to hear from you. Closing date for nominations Friday 31 October 2008. Read more.

The ParalympicsGB Talent Transfer Programme is a centrally coordinated recruitment process giving athletes who have either retired or are coming to the end of their career or recognise that they are not going to fulfil their performance ambitions in their current sport, an opportunity to try something new. With only four years to go to London 2012, the transferable skills honed in the current sport - technical, tactical, physical, and mental - could lay the foundations for a successful transfer into an alternative sport. Sky Living for Sport spacer Join the Bigger Picture
Sky have always been passionate about sports. In 2003, they got together with the Youth Sport Trust and launched Sky Living For Sport to encourage the spirit of adventure and creativity in our young people and help them to re-engage in school life. Structured programmes of activities help schools hit their behaviour improvement targets and have already engaged 14,000 young people aged 11-16 from over 600 schools across the UK.  Budmouth Technology College Weymouth, a past winner of a Partnership Award, used Sky Living For Sport with a group of year 11students from the Specialist Pathway group to complete one year of work-related learning. This is the first time that the Specialist Pathway team and the PE Department have worked in partnership. Sky Living For Sport trained the students to coach basketball and other activities. They applied what they had learned to run activity sessions at a local day centre for adults with learning disabilities. The project inspired the students to engage in sport outside of school to the extent that one student started her own 5-a-side ladies football team. Want to get your school involved with Sky Living For Sport? Click here to request more details and check out how Budehaven School from Cornwall got surfing with Sky Living For Sport.

Beat the bulge!
Combat the bulge by logging on to activeplaces.com, to find out about sports and fitness facilities in their area. The website has details of 1973 gyms and sports venues which are all located in the South West. Sport England Regional Director for the South West, Jim Clarke, said "Sport England has developed activeplaces.com to make it easier for people to get active. The most common New Year's resolution is to become fitter and healthier and our website will help them to do just that by providing information on where to go to get active."
