Minister for the Olympics Tessa Jowell and Guy Lavender on a recent visit to Weymouth and Portland. "Welcome to the new look Sport England SW e-newsletter. We hope you find the format helpful and not too much of a surprise as we are now in line with the e-communications being developed across the region with the seven County Sport Partnerships. "Sport England's key focus is increasing and sustaining adult (16+) participation in sport and active recreation. We will continue to work collaboratively with partners to strengthen existing ways of working and encourage new ways to develop community sport. Working with other partners in the Delivery System for Sport who are focused on school sport and elite sport, we need to manage the key transition points very carefully to make sure nobody drops through the gaps. "Please take time to review the outcomes of the recent 'Together for Sport' Conference that took place on the 27 & 28 June in London , attended by many of the key partners in the Delivery System. "For a more regionalised view on South West community participation, volunteering, club membership and coaching please download our advocacy Regional Plan Bulletin 7 on Community Participation. "I hope you will find the summary of the recent changes within Government useful too, following Gordon Brown's appointment as Prime Minister. "The SW Coaching Conference is coming up fast and will be held at the University of Bath on 26 July 2007. With a formidable line up of speakers and workshop presenters, including the likes of Olympic javelin silver medallist Steve Backley and hosted by John Inverdale its sure to be a lively event. London 2012Tessa Jowell impressed by preparations for 2012 sailing events On a visit to Weymouth and Portland, the Olympics Minister said visitors were in for a ‘real treat’ when watching the sailing in five years time. She also praised the work around cultural, business, community and sporting aspects of hosting a key part of the Games. Met by South West England director for the 2012 Games Guy Lavender, the minister enjoyed a briefing on the 2012 plans in Weymouth before jumping into a fast rib boat to speed across the bay to Portland to see the sailing venue – the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy. Tessa Jowell said: “The South West is a great example of how the benefits of hosting the London 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games will be spread far and wide across the country. “Visitors to the sailing events in 2012 are in for a real treat and I am particularly pleased by the work that the Academy is doing to promote the sport of sailing at all levels of ability and encourage the local community to take part.” Guy Lavender, who leads Team South West, the directorate co-funded by Sport England, said preparations were advanced and the local community would benefit. “I am delighted Olympics Minister Tessa Jowell has come to see the ongoing work and preparations being undertaken in Weymouth and Portland. We aim to deliver a superb sailing event and maximise the opportunities for the local community and South West England,” added Guy Lavender. The BBC, ITV and local media also took the opportunity for a 2012 update and to speak to the minister about South West England’s role in the Games. London 2012 Summer Roadshows

New Sports MinisterUnsurprisingly Gordon Brown made some radical changes in the days following his appointment as Prime Minister, both in terms of personnel and machinery of Government. The new Sports Minister Gerry Sutcliffe (Bradford South) is the former leader of Bradford Metropolitan Council. A Government Whip, junior Trade and Industry Minister and Home Office Minister, he was campaign manager for Alan Johnson in his unsuccessful bid to succeed John Prescott as Deputy Leader of the Labour Party. Sutcliffe is a sports enthusiast, spending a number of years as captain, coach and goalkeeper for the House of Commons football team. He was behind a syndicate to buy a large television screen to watch the 1998 World Cup in a Commons conference room. He supports Bradford City, Manchester United and Bradford Bulls rugby league team. Sutcliffe, on his appointment said: "As a sports fanatic, this is not just an incredible challenge but a true privilege too. Sport has tremendous power not just to inspire and delight but to change lives for the better. Be it on health, crime or social inclusion, I will be looking to harness that power and cement sport's place at the heart of government policy”. Meanwhile former Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, Tessa Jowell, will move to be based in the Cabinet Office as Minister for the Olympics (and Minister for London), while Richard Caborn, as expected, moves on from his role as Sports Minister and has taken a non-ministerial role as the PM's World Cup Ambassador leading England’s bid for the 2018 World Cup. The Prime Minister’s close ally, Ed Balls, will run the new Department for Children, Schools and Families. The new Department will play a strong role both in taking forward policy relating to children and young people, and coordinating and leading work across Government on youth and family policy. The new Department will assume responsibility for promoting the well-being, safety, protection and care of all young people and will also be responsible, together with the Department of Health (DH), for promoting the health of all children and young people, including measures to tackle key health problems such as obesity, as well as the promotion of youth sport with the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS). The Department will also be responsible for promoting the wider contribution of young people to their communities. It will assume responsibility from the Home Office for the Respect agenda. In addition it will lead a new emphasis across government on the prevention of youth offending, through joint responsibility with the Ministry of Justice for policy and funding of the Youth Justice Board. A new Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills (DIUS) has also been established from parts of the Department for Education and Skills and the DTI, to be run by John Denham MP. Other interesting appointments for sport include Jacqui Smith MP as Home Secretary, Hazel Blears MP as Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, Alan Johnson MP as Health Secretary, Jack Straw MP as Justice Secretary, Ed Miliband as Cabinet Office Minister while Baroness Julia Neuberger (a Liberal Democrat) will work with the Prime Minister, the Government and the voluntary sector to champion volunteering. Neuberger already leads on the Commission on the Future of Volunteering which is undertaking an inquiry into how the role of volunteers is changing and what support is needed from central government to deliver 21st century support for volunteering.
