Photo: Vicki Gregory (Marketing & Communications Officer, Cornwall Sports Partnership), Rachel Marriott (Workplace Development Officer, Cornwall & Isles of Scilly PCT) and Ben Sedgemore (Director of Sport, Corporate Games ) at the Official Launch of the Cornwall Corporate Games "First of all apologies that I am not in a position to share with you further details on our strategy for 2008-2011. Unfortunately, the announcement has been delayed and should now be announced by mid June. As soon as I can share fuller details with you I will. On a more positive note, I am pleased to report than the South West is now the most active region in the Country according to the latest Active People 2 Survey results, when comparing the six month period mid Oct 07 – Mid April 2008 results with the same period of Active People 1 data. It’s fantastic to see all our collective hard work and that of our community sport providers bearing fruit – here’s to an equally good summer of sport in the Region! ITV Westcountry are featuring this news. Read more and see how your County area is fairing. For the Active People diagnostic users amongst you, the results are now available under APS2 interim results tab. www.webreport.se/apd/login.aspx. This includes national, regional, CSP, County Council and Sports results. Please also take time to review our year with the Region’s Annual Review document for 2007/08. We have also produced a DVD that will shortly be available on our youtube account that includes a formal review by me, hopes and aspirations going forward by Chief Executive Jennie Price, edited highlights from the Regional Sports Conference and a selection of good practice projects and inspirational people within our County making a real difference to sport within our communities. "Within this month's edition, I would highlight the up and coming UK School Games 2008 happening in Bristol and Bath from 28th to 31st August 2008. Find out more about and how to sign up and be one of the 250 volunteers. Come and join me and my regional team who are also volunteering at the event and help us make a difference to the UK’s elite young athletes. Please continue to advise your schools, clubs and groups about our reduced entry @Bristol LoveSport Exhibition promotion and the last chance for leisure providers to join the Asda Sporting Chance physical activity campaign starting this summer. The newly updated funding bulletin has also proved popular and would urge those of you who have not signed up directly for the updates to do so. The funding advisors are also keen to receive your thoughts and feedback so please take the opportunity." Kind Regards. Jim Clarke Active PeopleSouth West most active region in the CountryLatest research from Sport England’s Active People Survey* shows that 62,000 more adults in the South West regularly take part in sport and active recreation – an increase of 1.5% when comparing to the same 6 month period of Active People 1 (mid October 2005 – mid April 2006) to the same period in Active People Survey 2 (mid October 2007 – mid April 2008). Sport England’s Active People Survey 2 indicates the South West is currently the most active region in the country, with the number of adults participating in at least three 30-minute sessions of moderate activity a week increasing by 1.5% percent , from 20.6% to 22.1% , when compared to the same period in Survey 1.* Interestingly, most of the growth came from women’s participation which increased over the six month period by 38,000 (1.8%percent) and lower socio-economic groups increased by 1.7% percent (from 16.6% to 18.3%). School Sport
UK School Games - Be one of the 250Join the Sport England SW regional team and Wesport County Sports Partnership in making a difference at this year's UK School Games - Do you want to be involved in what is one of the South West region´s major sporting events this year? Plans are now finalised to find a 250-strong volunteer team of all ages to help deliver the 2008 UK School Games in Bristol and Bath. The UK School Games is a multi-sport event for the UK´s elite young athletes of school age. Each of the nine sports are combined into a four-day Games environment designed to replicate the feel of major events such as the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games. The UK School Games seeks to create an inspirational and motivational setting which encourages more young people to take part and succeed in sport. Please volunteer and share this advert, volunteer application form and poster with your network. UK School Games reaches local SchoolsThe UK School Games Official School Supporters Programme, headed up by Jason Gardener, seeks to involve as many young people in the Games by providing a link to the competing teams, and engage with the UK School Games through physical education, school sport and whole school activities. Over 40 teachers from schools across Bath, Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire attended a day of workshops at the University of Bath in April 2008 to explore the many different ways in which they could involve the young people in the UK School Games, whether this meant inspiring them to qualify as a competitor through the relevant National Governing Body of Sport pathway, write school newspaper articles about their own school teams inspired by the UK School Games, or attend the four day event itself to sample the atmosphere and excitement of a major multi-sport event. Bristol Festival of School SportAround 1,200 pupils from 16 Bristol schools took part in the inaugural Bristol Festival of School Sport at the University of Bristol´s Coombe Dingle Sports Complex from 26 to 28 March 2008. The inaugural three-day festival, part of the Community Programme linked to the UK School Games, celebrated sports participation and achievement at all levels and was specifically aimed at pupils who do not usually represent their school in sport. Comprimising 12 different sports, including extreme golf, lacrosse, ultimate frisbee, tag rugby, table tennis, cycling, boccia, t-ball, rowing, orienteering, mini-tennis and indoor athletics, the Festival of School Sport catered for entrants at a participation level, aiming to give these young people a positive experience of sport and advice on how to get involved in regular sporting activities in their local area. The event was funded and delivered by a unique partnership of the following organisations; Bristol City Council, The John Rutley Sport Fund, the University of Bristol, West of England Sport Trust (Wesport), Healthy Schools and the School Sport Partnerships - Ashton Park, City Academy and Portway. The event was supported by student volunteers from the University of Bristol and Filton College and the School Sport Co- ordinators More on Bristol Festival of School Sport
Promoting SportLloyds TSB Local Heroes champions future Olympians and Paralympians- Over £1 million to be given to promising young sportspeople across Britain on the journey to London 2012 Lloyds TSB, the first Official Partner of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, has launched its nationwide programme, ´Lloyds TSB Local Heroes´. ´Lloyds TSB Local Heroes´ will provide up to £1,000 to 250 emerging young sportspeople identified each year across Britain, in the run up to London 2012 and beyond. By investing more than £1 million in ´Lloyds TSB Local Heroes´ over the next five years, the bank will play a major role in supporting Great Britain´s young sporting talent. Local Heroes will be delivered in partnership with SportsAid. Athletes receiving support through Local Heroes are already performing at a top GB or European level within their age group, but they have not yet made their ´breakthrough´ performance into senior competition. This is a critical period in their development. Costs are significant but athletes have not yet achieved World Class lottery funding status, they do not have the profile to secure commercial interest and are still in full time education or just starting on the job ladder. Speaking about ´Lloyds TSB Local Heroes´, LOCOG Chairman Lord Sebastian Coe said: "This initiative is exactly the kind of support British sport needs over the next five years. These young athletes are potential Olympic and Paralympic medal winners at London 2012 and beyond and the support ´Lloyds TSB Local Heroes´ provides to them will make a real difference to their development." ´Lloyds TSB Local Heroes´ is the bank´s first initiative to deliver its London 2012 vision of inspiring and supporting young people, businesses, and communities across Britain. The partnership with SportsAid aligns Lloyds TSB Local Heroes with the pathway for athlete development recognised by British sport. Read more on Lloyds TSB Local Heroes.
