We all have ability, the difference is how we use it*
* Stevie Wonder "Welcome to Sport England SW e-newsletter and thank you for taking the time to read through it. "The series of partner engagement days started with Sport England, each County Sport Partnership and its partners on 13 November 2007, with Active Dorset taking the lead. The other six will take place through to April 2008, so look out for your County Sport Partnership’s invitations. Whether you are part of a National Governing Body of Sport, School Sport Partnership, voluntary sector or health organisation, these days are a great opportunity to network and get involved with planning, attracting resources and delivering in partnership. “In response to the Foresight Report, Sport England is calling for a 'holistic, cross-governmental' approach to improving public health and tackling lifestyle diseases such as obesity. We should be using sport and active recreation in a preventative way, working together with health and wider agendas to increase and sustain opportunities for people to take part. "Immediately below is the first opportunity to sign up for next year's Regional Conference for Sport being held on 27/28 February 2008 at Center Parcs, Longleat. 'All Together Now - The Business of Sport' will focus on creating a more sporting and active region and looking at the skills required to deliver that goal. Last year's event was heavily oversubscribed, so please book now to avoid disappointment. "We also want to hear from volunteers first hand about their involvement in the development of Community Sport Networks in their local areas – this questionnaire looks at what the current involvement is and asks ‘what do sports volunteers want from their Community Sport Networks?’ A number of new publications, promoting sport resources and surveys are also featured in this issue that we hope will be of use to you in doing the day job. Please do forward this newsletter to your relevant networks and partners across the Region so they can also take advantage of these opportunities and knowledge sources." With best wishes Jim Clarke

NetworkingRole of Volunteers and their Engagement in SW Community Sports Networks
The purpose of a new Federation of South West Sports Organisations survey is to: - evaluate the current level of involvement from volunteers (as opposed to professionals from the voluntary, or third, sector) in the evolution of community sport networks as part of the delivery system for sport and active recreation in England. - look at the barriers to volunteer involvement in community sport networks We will use the feedback to make recommendations about how to maximise the effective input from volunteers into community sport networks. Please forward details to volunteers in your network and ask them to complete the survey by 15 February 2008. Community Sport has the Power to Transform LivesSport England Chairman Derek Mapp told guests at Sport England's Annual Open Meeting that the last 12 months had been 'challenging and inspiring' and that he believes 'passionately in community sport's power to transform the lives of people in England'. ProfilingMarket Segmentation
The segments provide the knowledge to influence people to take part. This work is part of our drive to get two million people doing more sport by 2012. Each segment can be explored at differing geographic levels. It is possible to find out what peoples sporting habits are in a particular street, community, local authority or region. This research builds on the results of Sport England’s Active People Survey, the Department of Culture, Media and Sport's Taking Part survey and the Mosaic tool from Experian. It will inform our Strategy and Business Plan 2008-2011 and help us invest our money into areas that will have the greatest impact. We are the only organisation to have this data and we want to share it with anyone who wants to get more people playing sport. New to segmentation? Sporting Champions Case StudySporting Champions run 450 visits each year of which: 200 are for community visits The visits are primarily used to support work done by Sports Development Officers and there have been requests from SDOs for examples of good visits from which they can learn. Each month we will feature a case study to support you, SDOs and others in the Delivery System. They are on the Promoting Sport toolkit and on the Sporting Champions website. Encouraging children with disabilities to take part in Community SportEvent: a multi-sports and activities week for children with disabilities and their siblings, organised by the Children’s Adventure Farm Trust. Spending time with Steve Daley, captain of England’s partially-sighted football team, raised the aspirations of a group of young people with disabilities. Impact: 30 children with disabilities and their siblings listened to Steve, sharing his passion for and commitment to sport. They then took part in a morning’s football coaching session under his guidance, at the end of which all vowed to remain part of a club and to take part in every coaching session. PlanningFacilities in the CountrysideThe latest Sport England planning bulletin 19 - Facilites in the Countryside - has been published. This bulletin brings together a number of recent developments in planning for sport and recreation in the countryside and focuses on the provision of facilities in countryside areas. In particular, it looks at the Environment Agency’s strategy for water-related sport and recreation (2006-2011) and Natural England’s research papers on outdoor recreation which guides the development of their Outdoor Recreation Strategy. At a more local level, good work is being done across the Region by local planning authorities as they prepare development plan and supplementary planning documents as part of their Local Development Frameworks (LDFs). An example of an emerging LDF document from Bedford, the Countryside publication and other planning bulletins can be downloaded here. Public Service Agreements and National IndicatorsThe Government announced the new Public Service Agreement (PSA) targets and a single set of National Indicators that will be used to determine Local Area Agreement Targets. HealthCall for 'Holistic, cross-governmental' approach to public health
Addressing the FIA Industry Summit, Mr Mapp said that with recent research suggesting that 60 per cent of men and 40 per cent of women would be obese by 2050, targets for levels of physical activity needed to be 'tougher and stronger'. He warned that the 'obesity explosion' would otherwise happen sooner than expected. He added that part of the legacy of the 2012 Olympics was to be the delivery of an extra 2 million people participating in physical activity and that this would only happen through greater collaboration and cooperation between the public and private sector. Highlighting the role of local authorities in improving public health, Mr Mapp said that a key problem was the sustainability of funding for leisure and sport activities as local government was continuously under pressure to reduce costs. A potential solution to this would be the 'community sport hub' concept, which would see both private and public facilities on the same community site. More on Derek Mapp's call to action BHF 30 a day toolkitEarlier this year, the British Heart Foundation launched the 30 a Day campaign to encourage older adults to get active to safeguard their heart health. ResearchTaking Part: The National Survey of Culture, Leisure and SportThe Taking Part survey was commissioned by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport working in partnership with several of its Non-Departmental Public Bodies. The survey collects data about engagement and non-engagement in culture, leisure and sport. This information helps the Department and partners to better understand those who do, and do not, engage with its sectors. It provides vital evidence towards the Department’s aim of improving the quality of life for everyone by providing people with the chance to get involved in a variety of these opportunities. The Department currently has five strategic priorities, one of which is to further enhance access to culture and sport for children. This has been confirmed as a continuing priority going forward. The report presents headline findings across the cultural and sporting sectors. It presents engagement overall as well as out of school lessons, and includes frequency of engagement and level of enjoyment. The report begins by examining cross-sector engagement, and then looks at each cultural and sporting sector in turn. Where possible, the same analysis is conducted for each sector for ease of comparison. The final section of the report looks at whether children are allowed to play outside and children’s play facilities. View headline findings from the child survey

CoachingCommunity Sports Coach South West Regionally Co-ordinated Coach Development ProjectIn a project driven by the region's seven County Sports Partnerships (CSPs), each CSP has committed to working together with sports coach UK and Governing Bodies of Sport to benefit, initially, the region's full-time and significant part-time hours Community Sports Coaches (CSCs). The project aims to ensure that the CSCs have access to a personal development plan in the primary sport for which they are employed to deliver. FundingClub Development and Funding WorkshopsSport England SW are supporting a series of club development and funding workshops aimed at clubs and other voluntary sports organisations from all sports. The workshops are being co-ordinated by Neil Parsley, England Athletics SW, who has already made contact with a number of CSP’s and delivered workshops in partnership in a number of counties. View details of the most recent one in Wiltshire. We hope you will be able to help support Neil in preparing at least two workshops per county over the next 6 months.
