Active People Survey 2
Sport England commissioned the second
Active People survey in 2007. This survey of English people's
sporting habits has been used to establish a baseline we can use as
a starting point as we measure our progress in getting one million
people doing more sport by 2013.
We have produced a factsheet
outlining the survey results and relating them to the one
million people target.
The second Active People survey revealed an
increase in the numbers taking part in sport.
- 6.85 million adults (aged 16 and over) participated in sport
three times a week for 30 minutes at moderate intensity (16.5%). In
2005/6, this figure was 6.3 million adults (15.5%), so there was a
statistically significant increase of 552,000 adult participants in
the two years between 2005/06 and 2007/08.
- Participation among females increased from 2.57 million (12.3
%) to 2.81 million (13.2 %), an increase of 240,000 over 2
years.
- Participation among adults from lower socio-economic groups
(NS-SEC 5-8) increased by 100,000 from 1.81 million (11.8%) to 1.91
million (12.7%).
Sporting highlights
The survey also found that:
- Over 2 million adults in England (age 16 and over)
volunteer in sport for at least one hour a week. This has increased
by 125,000 between 2005/6 and 2007/8 (from 1.92 million adults to
2.04 million adults)
- There was no change in the percentage of the adult population
who have received tuition between 2005/6 and 2007/8
- Between 2005/6 and 2007/8 there has been a statistically
significant decrease in the percentage of the adult population who
have taken part in organised competition, and the percentage of the
adult population who are members of a club where they play
sport
- Satisfaction with local sports provision significantly declined
from 2005/6 to 2007/8
Factsheets
We have produced a series of factsheets collating and analysing
the information nationally, regionally, locally and by individual
sport.
