Man and woman in front of lockers

If Sport England is to succeed in building a world-leading community sport system we need evidence, insight and understanding.

We need to track our progress against our grow, sustain and excel targets. We want to find out why people play sport, what keeps them engaged and why they drop out. And we want to understand what does and doesn’t work in getting people playing more and better sport so we can invest our time, money and expertise wisely.

Our Active People Survey measures how many people participate, who they are, what sports they do, and how this varies across England. The latest release revealed that 6.82 million people now play sport at least three times a week.

Our ‘satisfaction with the quality of the sporting experience’ survey ( SQSE ), provides measurement and insight into the reason why people take part in sport and what impacts on their level of satisfaction. These things matter – as the better the quality of experience the more likely they are to keep playing. Results from the first satisfaction survey, published in June 2009, show that overall satisfaction levels are high. The second year of the survey, SQSE2, will take place between March and May 2010, with headline results published in June 2010.

The Sport England research team has developed an online alert service which will keep you informed of recent and forthcoming research developments. This bulletin is part of our continuing commitment to find improved ways to disseminate research findings. If you would like to receive the research bulletin, email: research@sportengland.org
