Great Yorkshire Show 2008

Royal seal of approval for sport at the Great Yorkshire Show

The Duke of Edinburgh made a special visit to North Yorkshire Sport at the Great Yorkshire Show this month, when the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh attended the show to celebrate its 150th year.

Visiting the Discovery Zone, the Duke of Edinburgh spoke to Sport England & North Yorkshire Sport staff and showed real interest and enthusiasm for the work of the sports clubs and National Governing Bodies of sport that attended the show.

Claro Orienteering Club from Harrogate and Yorkshire Gliding Club took part in the stand to promote their sports.  And representatives from the National Governing Bodies of Modern Pentathlon, Triathlon and Squash all staged have-a-go activities, which saw hundreds of people trying out the sports for free during their visit to the show.

Highlights included demonstrations and Fencing coaching from the Modern Pentathlon team; whilst England Squash provided free coaching for children inside an inflatable squash court.

The British Triathlon Federation gave the public a taste of Cycling with top tips from Leeds based athlete, Alistair Brownlee, who will represent Great Britain at the Beijing Olympics.

The North Yorkshire Sport stand also hosted representatives and activities from the CTC (Cyclists’ Touring Club); the Federation of Disability Sports Organisations (FDSO), along with Harrogate Borough Council and the other local authorities in North Yorkshire.

Thanks must go to all involved in making the show such a success for Yorkshire sport – you have done Yorkshire proud!
