Promoting sport made easier

13 August 2007

An encyclopaedia of simple-to-use information on how to promote sport and active recreation to the public has been unveiled by Sport England.

As well as a free library of community sport images, the Promoting Sport Toolkit contains information on everything from how to promote sport to different age groups to how to run events and examples of how other sports clubs and organisations have fulfilled their potential.

Aimed at County Sports Partnerships (CSPs), Community Sports Networks (CSNs) and sports clubs, the Promoting Sport Toolkit also contains a calendar of sporting events, a discussion forum and useful links for those seeking more information.

The Toolkit, which can be accessed at www.sportengland.org/promotingsport will be invaluable as Sport England strives to fulfil its ambition of getting two million people more active in sport by 2012. It also contains a wealth of information on how to promote sport to the 33,000 young people who fall out of sport each year.

Speaking about the Toolkit, Richard Barrington, Business Development Manager for the West of England Sport Trust said: “As a County Sports Partnership we have a significant challenge in promoting sport and physical activity through our networks. The Promoting Sport Toolkit will allow us to improve the sharing of good practice throughout the CSP networks in the South West and ensure our partners are able to join up thinking and maximize the use of resources.”

Tom Gibbins, Business Development Manager for the Greater Warwickshire Sport Partnership said: "We are sure that the new Promoting Sport Toolkit will be a fantastic resource and will make promoting sport easier. We are particularly impressed with the extensive photo library and 'How To Guides', which will prove especially useful for our local sports clubs and will help us to drive up participation."

Laura Hall, Marketing and Information Officer at the Greater Manchester Sports Partnership said: "Getting people involved in sport for the first time, or encouraging people to increase the amount of activity they do can often be a challenge, and in many cases, local amateur sports clubs are in a good position to understand their local communities and get people active.  We welcome all resources that can potentially help our local sports infrastructure, such as the Promoting Sport Toolkit, which offers advice, information and examples of how clubs can best reach target audiences with a long term aim of increasing activity levels."

Louise Rowland, Sports Development Officer at Winchester City Council said: “The Promoting Sport Toolkit is a fantastic resource and will certainly help Winchester City Council to promote sport and drive up participation in the south east/ Hampshire. The toolkit with its extensive photo library, events calendar and useful guides is a great resource for anyone working in sport and the delivery system and will make promoting sport far easier.”

The Toolkit’s ‘How to guides’ draw on examples of how other sports clubs and organisations from across the country have promoted themselves. It provides essential information on how to work with the media, even suggesting a press release template. It also gives details on how to encourage people to volunteer and how to use promotional techniques, such as designing leaflets and adverts.

Sports clubs will also be able to log onto the site to find examples of how their counterparts from other regions have promoted themselves, whether it be a horse riding centre in Newcastle or a fitness centre in Norfolk.

Notes to editors

Sport England exists to sustain and increase participation in community sport. It is a non-departmental public body and Lottery distributor. Its ambition is to get two million people participating more in sport by 2012. It does this by promoting, advising and investing in community sport.
