Bowls - supply and demand study (2000)

Consultant: MEW Research

The Research:
The aim of this study was to provide information on the levels and patterns of use of indoor bowls centres in order to re-define a set of parameters for Sport England's Facilities Planning Model (FPM).

To achieve this the survey aimed to:

  • Establish the number and characteristics of customers in terms of gender, age group and social class
  • Establish frequency of visit, duration of activity and catchment area
  • Determine the balance (percentage of time) between club, school, casual and coaching/instructional usage
  • Measure the distribution of various types of usage between peak and off-peak times
  • Determine the range of sports offered and the percentage of time allocated to each.

Together this data will be used to re-define the following FPM parameters:

  • At-one-time capacity
  • Peak period
  • Participation rates
  • Programme balance
  • Relative attractiveness

Progress to date:
