Active Places is a database of sports facilities throughout England held by Sport England. It includes local authority leisure facilities, as well as commercial and club sites, contains information on specific facility details, such as, where the facility is, its size, opening times, contact numbers and activities. Active Places provides the information on the type of facility and its location for the indicator.

What is Active Places Power?
Using the information contained in Active Places, we have developed Active Places Power which has a range of additional analytical and planning tools, to help Local Authorities get the most out of the Active Places data. Active Places Power is free to use for Local Authorities, however, you need to become a registered user. To become a registered user, click here.

Active Places Power will give you a number of tools to help you improve you indicator score:

  • Map all 6 facilities types included in the indicator
  • Show what areas fall into the ONS urban / rural classification areas
  • See how many people are within a 20 minute catchment of a facility (soon to be released)
  • Easier to feedback changes to facility information

Please note that Active Places, and Active Places Power will NOT give you your indicator score.

What information is used in the CPA from Active Places?
The information that is used for the CPA is the relevant facility types (health & fitness, STP, golf courses, grass pitches, swimming pools and sports halls), and their location (six figure x and y grid reference)

What information is it important to update?
For the purposes of the CPA, it is important that as a local authority, you ensure the following:

  • That all the relevant facility types have been included in your area;
  • That the current facilities on the system are in the correct locations;

Although Active Places stores a great deal of facility information it is essential that local authorities principally focus on updating the above two points as they are key to ensuring an accurate indicator score.

How do I provide feedback?
If you find that a facility is missing please send an email to ActivePlaces@sportengland.org. When providing feedback you should ensure that you provide as much information as possible with regard to new sites (including providing six figure x and y co-ordinates for grass pitches). Where changing information on existing sites, please provide the relevant site and facility IDs in your submission. Before sending information about a new site, please ensure that:

  • it is a facility type that is already on Active Places;
  • it meets the criteria for that facility type e.g. STP's have minimum dimensions for inclusion (definitions of facilities can be found under the About the Data link at the bottom of the Active Places homepage )

We are currently working on an improved feedback facility, which should be available over the summer.
For further information on providing updates, please see the Power User Manua
l

Will my updates be visible on Active Places?
Under normal circumstances any updates that are provided, once validated, should be visible on the system within 14 days. However due to an improved data synchronization system being put in place we cannot guarantee that any updates sent through will be visible within 14 days.

Are quality accreditation schemes visible against sites on Active Places Power?
No, these are held separately. We are looking to apply these to the database over the coming year.

Can I see my current score on Active Places Power?
No, the actual run for the CPA is done off line. Choice and Opportunity scores are now available online. Click on the link below:

Will sending updates stop the annual collection of data on my sites?
No, this will continue as scheduled. Therefore you may find that you are contacted over the next few months by The Leisure Database Company or Landmark prior to the deadline, which means you may not have to send any updates through.
