Supplying Sport England

Background
Sport England is the brand name of the English Sports Council which was established by Royal Charter on 19th September 1996 as one of the two successor bodies to the Sports Council. Sport England is charged by its charter to take lead in all aspects of sport and active recreation which require administration, representation or co-ordination in England.

Sport England is the Government agency responsible for advising, investing in and promoting community sport to create an active nation.  Sport England’s ambition is to get two million people doing more sport by 2012 – and to make sure that participation is sustained. We seek to do this by promoting, investing in and advising on the development and maintenance of high quality sporting pathways which release potential through: community sports activities; sports clubs; coaches and officials; player pathways; volunteering and sports facilities.  Since 1994 we have invested more than £550m of exchequer funding and £2.2bn National Lottery funding into sport and physical activity.

Sport England works closely with a number of important stakeholder and partners at national and local level.  These include:

  • Government, particularly our sponsoring department, the Department for Culture, Media and Sport;
  • Local government;
  • Health sector;
  • National governing bodies for sport;
  • The education sector; and
  • The voluntary sector.
