What can I claim expenses for and how do I do it?

As a volunteer you won’t be paid for your time, but volunteering shouldn’t cost you money either. So usually any expenses incurred while volunteering, such as travel, food, drinks and equipment, should be reimbursed. Just make sure you keep hold of receipts and keep track of what you spend. Ask your volunteer manager about the volunteer expense policy at your club to find out what you can claim as an expense.

As a volunteer you should only get out-of-pocket expenses reimbursed. If you get any other payments than out-of-pocket expenses, you may be classed as an employee or worker. This can affect your rights.
