Sport England backs new sports marketing qualification

13 December 2004

Sport England, the strategic lead for sport in England, today welcomed the introduction of a new Professional Diploma in Sports Marketing.

Validated by the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM), the qualification will be offered from February 2005.  It is a joint initiative between the Cambridge Marketing College, the UK’s leading professional marketing college, and Sport England.

The two organisations worked together to devise the programme that specifically tailors the Professional Diploma in Marketing to the Sports industry. The course will initially be available to around 20 students and also covers core modules including planning, communications and research.

Roger Draper, Chief Executive of Sport England said:  “Marketing and campaigning are key to achieving our aims of increasing participation in sport and leveraging more investment into sport. By helping to enhance skills in this area, we hope this innovative qualification will make a contribution to our work and the future success of sport in England.”

Charles Nixon, Director of Cambridge Marketing Colleges, said: “We are delighted to be introducing this qualification and building on our existing range of courses. The diploma uniquely offers executives working in the sports industry opportunities to gain a professional marketing qualification that is attuned to their needs.  We believe that it will play an important role in building expertise in sports marketing.“

Dr Simon Chadwick of the University of London, a member of the course development team, will serve as a lead examiner for the new course. The author of ‘The Business of Sport Management’ and ‘The Marketing of Sports’, Dr Chadwick said: “Marketing plays a vital role of in the growing, multi-million pound business of sport. The fact this course has been developed by the CIM acknowledges the unique skill-set and knowledge base required by sports marketers. The introduction of the course also reinforces the position of sport as a major industry in the UK.”

As pioneers of this new qualification Sport England will be looking to sponsor one student on the programme each year.

Roger Draper, Chief Executive of Sport England, added: “By sponsoring a student on this course Sport England will demonstrate its commitment to drive up skills within sport.  We also aim to enhance the opportunities of someone with a passion for sport and a flair for marketing who, due to financial constraints, would not normally consider taking this qualification."

About the Professional diploma in Sports Marketing

Overview
The Professional Diploma in Sports Marketing is a joint initiative between Cambridge Marketing College and Sport England. The Diploma is validated by the Chartered Institute of Marketing. It offers executives working in the sports industry opportunities to gain a professional marketing qualification tailored to their needs.

Progression opportunities
Successful delegates will be able to progress to the Professional Postgraduate Diploma, the highest professional marketing qualification available.

The course
tudents may elect to study by distance learning or intensive weekend courses.  Delegates study the same syllabus as the standard Professional Diploma in Marketing but then apply it to the sports sector.

Duration
The course usually takes 12 months to complete. However owing to the modular nature of the course some delegates may complete it in less time, though this requires considerable dedicated study time.

Sponsorship
Sport England will look to sponsor one student per year to take the Professional Diploma course, subject to applications received and review after year one.  It is envisaged that the sponsorship would usually help to fund a talented individual working in sport, but not employed by Sport England, and that they would do Sport England-related project work for the course.

Applications
Applications for places on the course may be made directly to the college by email sports@marketingcollege.com attaching an up-to-date curriculum vitae.
