Sport England welcomes FA move   to develop women's football

26 September 2008

Sport England welcomes The FA’s announcement that it is to develop a women’s Super League and appoint a women’s performance manager for the elite teams. We believe there is great potential in women’s football and that with the right support and structures interest in women’s football will continue to grow.

Last year Sport England awarded £585,000 to The FA by match funding sponsorship invested by Tesco.  This funding supported The FA to employ county coaches to develop the game at grassroots level, develop coaches & volunteers in The FA Women's Premier League and to set up regional coach mentoring programmes.  It also supported Tesco to create two new national grassroots cup competitions for girls at U14 and U16 level. We believe this will help achieve the ambition of getting over 16,000 more female players involved in the game.

Sport England is working with The FA and Football Foundation to grow footballs popularity, sustain players’ interest and to produce more talented women players.
