‘On Your Marks’ is the first set of Education Materials to be produced by London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games and partners since we won the right to host the 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games in London last year. The online resource is a first response to the enthusiasm and demand for information about the 2012 Games coming from the education sector.
The London 2012 Organising Committee has worked closely with DfES, DCMS, British Olympic Foundation, British Paralympic Association, Scottish Executive Education Department, Welsh Assembly Government and Department of Education (Northern Ireland) to produce this resource which will be available for download at www.london2012.com/onyourmarks.
‘On Your Marks’ is aimed at all young people and teachers with some specific but adaptable material for 7-14 year olds. The materials include news articles, fact sheets and an image bank covering a wide range of topics which can be used in subjects right across the curriculum. The resource is not a traditional ‘teaching pack’ but does provide some supporting cross-curricular teaching hints to give teachers ideas as to how they might use these resources within the classroom and there is also a facility for teachers to submit their own ideas of ways to use the resource.
It is important to note that this resource is a very first step in the development of the London 2012 Education Programme. In the lead up to 2012 we shall be working with our partners to deliver a comprehensive programme that encompasses a larger number of projects and initiatives and will engage larger numbers of children and young people across the UK and the world.
The ‘On Your Marks’ website will be live from 27th September and accessible at www.london2012.comnyourmark/os.
The Materials will be promoted through targeted media and in all London 2012 youth focused communications. In addition we are working with DfES to explore how the materials can be communicated through their communication channels including their website, their publications and via their regular emails to schools.
