London Youth Games to appoint first Chief Executive

Sports Recruitment International has been retained by The Balfour Beatty London Youth Games (LYG) to appoint their first ever Chief Executive to drive the event through to 2012 and beyond.

The LYG is Europe's largest youth sport event, attracting over 20,000 competitors from the 33 London borough’s to over 40 sports competitions annually and after a sustained period of growth, a full time Chief Executive is needed to continue this excellent progress.

Anthony Kendall, Chairman of The LYG explained ‘Over the past 30 years, The LYG has evolved from an event to mark the Queen’s Jubilee to the largest youth sports event in Europe. This has been down to the hard work of volunteers, the kindness & flexibility of suppliers and the excellent support of our various stakeholders. With the renewed interest in sport domestically and a focus on London 2012, we feel now is the right time to have a full time Chief Executive to develop the games to their full potential’.

Leigh Hine, Head of Public Sport at Sports Recruitment International believes the incoming Chief Executive will have many opportunities to expand and develop the games from both a commercial and performance perspective. ‘Anthony and the board have done an amazing job with The LYG to get them to the stage where they are now, and that’s not just around the profile of the event. The long term sponsorship deal with Balfour Beatty means the incoming Chief Executive will have an excellent financial platform to build from in addition to supportive stakeholders, partners, suppliers and a passionate board’.

Kendall believes the successful candidate can come from a wide range of backgrounds but, a passion for youth and sports development is essential, a point agreed with by Hine. ‘Sports experience is not a necessity for this position but strong skills across business planning, stakeholder management, partnership negotiation, coupled with the determination to develop the games are imperative.
