Galtres Sports Hall Builders to Move In
WORK ON NEW SPORTS HALL AND ARTS CENTRE TO START

Building work on a new sports hall and arts centre in Easingwold will begin next month after final funding was secured this week.

The £1.1 million project for the Galtres Centre in Easingwold will complete a 20 year development plan first hatched in 1987.

The original plan saw the conversion of a town centre manor house into a community centre.  Since then social facilities, leisure hall, offices, all weather floodlit pitch, creche and fitness studio have been added.

Peter Rees, the current Chairman of the Galtres Centre Sports Committee said: "We are delighted that this milestone has been reached and that we now have the funding in place to start building.

We are indebted to Sport England and Hambleton District Council who, between them, dug a bit deeper and closed the funding gap we were faced with just before Christmas."

The four badminton court sized hall will be suitable for 5-a-side football, tennis, badminton, netball, basketball, aerobics and martial arts.  It s also being equipped with two double bay indoor cricket nets to help local clubs with pre-season training.

The existing Leisure Hall is to be converted into a performing arts space which will feature retractable seating, an acoustic ceiling and new lighting to accommodate audiences of up to 250.

Building work is due to commence in February and be completed by October 2008.
