Schoolchildren for Children, is a charity which encourages children to take exercise while raising money for the development of extra-curricular sporting equipment in their own schools as well as for schools in some of the poorest countries in the world.
It is remarkably simple and, partly for this reason, appealing. The children raise a pound each by walking, running or jogging a minimum of a mile as an organised school activity – 50 pence for their own school, 50 pence for schools in developing countries.
Last year a pilot project in Wales by the charity raised £10,000 for UNICEF – and a similar amount for the Welsh schools which took part.
On Friday, 30 September, Martin Johnson – England's World Cup winning rugby captain – will flag off a series of synchronised events for all participating schools across the country. This occasion is expected to attract considerable national interest. However, the appeal should be seen as part of a sustainable health-related fitness programme within the school – and not simply as a one-off event.
Schoolchildren for Children was launched by the British and Irish Lions just before they left for New Zealand. In four weeks, 92 schools have signed on, with more than 24,500 pupils taking part. The momentum is increasing.
The scheme is attracting wide support from Government, as can be seen on the endorsement page on our website (www.schoolchildrenforchildren.org). Sports organisations such as the Youth Sport Trust, which have programmes to encourage exercise in our schools, also support the scheme. All the administration costs have been covered by separate sponsorship – so all the money raised goes towards the purpose intended.
Please promote the scheme and encourage all PE teachers within your county to add their school to the list of participating schools. These schools can be viewed on the roll of honour on the website.
