"Maximising the increase in London participation at community and grass-roots level in all sport and across all groups as a lasting legacy of the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games"
On Monday 17th July 2006, Sport England in collaboration with the GLA and the ALG held a consultation event at the Oval to discuss "Maximising the increase in London participation at community and grass-roots level in all sport and across all groups as a lasting legacy of the London 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games".
The purpose of the day was to bring people “up to speed” with the objectives for the London 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games and the agencies involved, foster aspirational thinking around how to maximise participation in community level sport in London within the context of the London 2012 legacy.
The Olympic Board has established a set of objectives and sub-objectives for the London 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games. The Mayor's office is accountable for the sub-objectives relating to the delivery of the wider economic, social, environmental and sporting benefits for London. Within these sub-objectives, Sport England have been given the lead role by the GLA for sub-objective 4.5 Maximising the increase in London participation at community and grass-roots level in all sport and across all groups.
The day was highly interactive with two main speakers - David Hemery, Vice Chair of the British Olympic Association and Legacy champion and 12 yr old Amber Charles, who was part of the delegation that won the bid in Singapore.
Both speakers brought inspiration and reminded delegates of the opportunity to be grasped, and the hopes around the Olympic legacy.
Matt Delaney, Director of Sport England London said “ The consultation event in partnership with the Association of London Government and the GLA was a great opportunity to foster aspirational thinking and identify possible interventions that could make a fundamental impact in participation levels in London leading up to and beyond the London 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games.”
“This will be the start of an on-going process over the next few months, linked to the sub-regional planning process, to help deliver a robust delivery plan for 4.5 by December 06” he added.
Feedback from the consultation will be on the site shortly.
