Jennie Price to be new Chief Executive of Sport England

This morning Derek Mapp, Chair of Sport England, announced the appointment of Jennie Price as the new CEO of Sport England. She will join the organisation in April 2007.

Jennie Price, a barrister by training, has extensive senior management experience in the private and public sectors and a track record of working with Government.

She is currently Chief Executive of WRAP (Waste & Resources Action Programme). This was established by Government in 2000 to improve the UK’s recycling performance and reduce waste. Jennie Price developed the strategic plan for the organisation and has grown it from an annual budget of £10 million to £80 million with a staff of over 200. As part of WRAP’s work, she has overseen the delivery of one of the most successful consumer communication campaigns in the environmental field – Recycle Now.  This campaign has increased the number of committed recyclers in England by five million people over the last two years.

She is a member of the Joint DTI/Defra Environmental Innovations Advisory Group and has played a leading role in the Government's Sustainable Procurement Task Force.

Before heading WRAP Jennie Price spent almost 20 years in the construction industry, first as a lawyer and then as Chief Executive of the Major Contractors Group and the Construction Confederation, two of the leading representative bodies for the UK construction industry.

Her extensive senior management experience has been recognised in her appointment as a Visiting Fellow at the Cranfield School of Management. She is also a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and an Honorary Member of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors.

Derek Mapp said:

“I am delighted Jennie Price has accepted the role of CEO of Sport England. She will bring to the organisation both her experience of working in a tough industry and in setting up a government programme from scratch and exceeding the challenging targets she was set.

“This is a critical time for Sport England and the development of community sport. Our ambition is to increase the number of people involved in sport and active recreation by two million by 2012.  I am sure Jennie is the right person to lead Sport England to deliver this important mission, which is all the more pressing in light of the crisis of obesity and inactivity facing our country.”

Jennie Price said:

“I am delighted to be joining Sport England as I know how important sport is in the lives of so many people. I have always been passionate about football. This goes right back to my childhood days on the terraces with my father, who had a trial for Wolverhampton Wanderers in the late 1940s. I still watch Wolves play whenever I can."

Notes to Editors

Sport England is working to create an active nation through sport, providing advice to partners, investing in community sport and promoting sport and its benefits. Our aim is to increase the number of people participating in sport and active recreation by two million by 2012, with a specific focus on hard to reach groups that are currently under-represented. Sport England is a non-departmental public body that distributes both Lottery and public funding to develop community sport.

Sport England has nine Regional Sports Boards (RSBs), each made up of experts from areas such as business, local government, sport, health and education. The RSBs provide the strategic lead for sport in their regions and distribute investment for community sport.
