Physical activity and health

The role of sport in promoting physical and metal health and its contribution to reducing obesity and chronic heart disease is being increasingly recognised.

Choosing Health; Physical activity and sport playing its part in delivering on the health agenda
A resource for Strategic Health Authorities and Primary Care Trusts

pdf logo Physical activity resource (153 Kb)

This guidance resource has been produced to support commissioners and service providers with your physical activity work.  The resource has been developed to support you with your local delivery planning process, partnerships, resource commitments and performance management of physical activity. The resource also provides guidance on the role that physical activity can play in tackling obesity along with other health priorities focusing on particular target groups.

The need for the resource emanated from discussions in the West Midlands region between the Strategic Health Authorities and Sport England.  This was followed by extensive consultation with Strategic Health Authorities and a wide range of Primary Care Trusts across the country who supported the development of the work and helped to shape the contents of the resource.

The resource has been developed in close consultation with the Department of Health who are supportive of the approach.  We are continuing to discuss with them how the resource can develop over time to support you further.

The resource is currently a discussion document and has been produced to provide maximum flexibility.  We would welcome feedback on how useful the information has been and any additional areas you would like included.  Please can you email any comments you have on the resource to Emma Croghan at the following address Ecconsultnow@aol.com by 1st February 2006.
