Sports participation in Europe: COMPASS 1999
Consultant: Leisure Industries Research Centre (LIRC), Sheffield Hallam University with the University of Rome.

The research:
COMPASS was initially a collaborative initiative between Sport England, UKSport, and CONI, the Italian National Olympic Committee. The objective of the research was to identify problems in making comparisons in levels and patterns of participation in sport in different European countries with the long-term aim of achieving greater harmonisation and comparability of sports participation statistics. The research involved a general audit of all Council of Europe countries to identify large-scale surveys in place; the development of an appropriate evaluation framework for measuring comparative levels and patterns of participation in sport; the application of the framework in a comparative study drawing on existing data from seven countries including the UK and Italy; preparation of guidelines and recommendations for further harmonisation.

Progress to date:
The first COMPASS review and analysis was completed and published in 1999. Extension of the COMPASS project to assess further methodological advances and include more countries in the comparative framework is being led by the Italian Olympic Committee.
