Sports participation and ethnicity in england: national survey (1999/2000)

Consultant:
Office for National Statistics (ONS)

The Research
The aim of this study was to provide robust statistical data on the levels and patterns of sporting participation among ethnic minority groups in England. To this end questions were asked with regard to the following:

  • Participation rates and level of involvement in sport
  • Location of sports involvement
  • Attitudes towards sports
  • Sporting achievements
  • Other forms of sports related involvement such as media viewing, attendance at sporting events,
administration and general levels of interest
  • Role models
  • Experience of sport in school
  • Experience of discrimination in relation to sport

The study provides sufficient sample sizes to enable an analysis of the levels of participation by eight different ethnic minority groups and to compare these with the equivalent results for the population as a whole. The study also explores the differences in levels of participation and attitudes towards sport for men and women and the different barriers that impact on them. Further analysis is planned to explore age and social class differences.

Progress to date:  Project completed.
