The Research The aims of this study are to identify current levels of participation in sport by adults with a disability and their views on the barriers and constraints which may prevent them from taking part in sport. The primary objectives of the research are to:
- Develop an appropriate definition of disability which can be used consistently in all of Sport England's research related to disability
- Identify, across a range of sports, current levels of participation in sport by adults with a disability and retrospective information on participation at key stages in their life
- Identify perceived barriers to participation in sport by adults with a disability and their views on what would encourage them to take part in sport
- Assist Sport England in interpreting the research evidence to make recommendations on future action to increase participation in sport by adults with a disability.
This research is the first comprehensive national survey of disabled adults' participation in, and attitudes towards, sport.
