Use and management of local authority halls and pools 1999

Consultant: Public Attitude Surveys (PAS)

The research
This was a major national survey examining the use made of local authority sports halls and swimming pools and how such facilities are managed. The overall aims of the survey were to improve the quality of facility planning advice available at a local and national level and to monitor progress in strategic policy areas of the English Sports Council. Specifically the survey has been used to:

  • Provide national participation rates on how many people use such facilities, who they are, and what they use them for
  • Improve and extend Sport England's Facilities Planning Model (FPM)
  • Provide local authorities with target indicators against which to benchmark their performance
  • Examine the effects of different management policies on the number and characteristics of customers.

Progress to date: Project completed.
