Economic impact of major sports events 1998

Consultant
Leisure Industries Research Centre (LIRC)

The research
Sports events have for some time been viewed in the United States of America and Australia as a means of economic and social regeneration, both at a national and local level. This realisation has led to aggressive bidding for major sports events, such as the Olympics which were held in Atlanta in 1996 and are due to be held in Sydney in 2000.  However, the United Kingdom has only more recently begun to acknowledge the economic and social as well as sporting benefits that major sports events can bring to a host city, region or country.

The aim of this research is to

  • Evaluate the economic impact of major sports events on the economies of the host cities and towns and more widely within the regions and countries as a whole

Develop a detailed evaluation model in order to forecast the likely costs and benefits of hosting different types of major sports event and to evaluate the actual economic impact of hosting a major sports event - this model will enable studies to be conducted in a consistent manner thereby making them comparable
