Evaluating impact

Project Evaluation

Sport England has developed a 3-tier approach to the evaluation of projects:

Tier 1 - Basic Evaluation aims to establish value for money and benchmark performance.

All projects funded to deliver sport and active recreation, and those that concentrate solely on coach development or volunteer support, are required to report every quarter on a minimum of one and a maximum of five standard Key Performance Indicators (KPIs). The number of KPIs depends on the type of project. To view a step-by-step guide to the data that is required, click here.

Tier 2 - Focused Evaluation develops case studies to establish what works, identify good practice and foster learning and improvement. Click here to view completed case studies.

Tier 3 - Experiment and Innovation will test new ideas and challenge conventional wisdom with carefully designed interventions.

Guidance for National Governing Bodies of sport (NGBs)

Sport England has prepared two guidance documents on evaluation for NGBs – one on using the lessons from the Active England programme to help design interventions and one on measuring the impact of interventions. Although these documents have been prepared primarily to support NGBs in the development of their 2009-2013 plans, they provide guidance relevant to anyone planning a programme of sports delivery.
