Equity in sport is a high priority in all aspects of Sport England's research, from the design, to implementation and reporting of outcomes. Much of the focus of Sport England's research is on identifying and understanding better the inequities in sporting opportunity which exist amongst different groups in the population and the way these may be overcome.

Participation in Sport in England: Sports Equity Index 2002
The Sports Equity Index assesses the extent of social inequities in participation in sport and active recreation in England. The Index draws on statistical information provided by the General Household Survey carried out by the Office for National Statistics and Sport England’s Young People and Sport Surveys carried out by MORI. It provides an analysis of the relative propensity of different groups within the population to take part in sport. By establishing a standardised index it provides a new perspective and a fascinating insight into the social demography of sport that enables us to clearly distinguish between the sporting ‘haves’ and sporting ‘have nots’ in our society. By comparing statistics between 1996 and 2002 the Index provides a unique insight into those groups that are experiencing increased inequities and those where the gap may be narrowing.

Commission for Equality and Human Rights
The government published its white paper on a single equality and human rights commission, five years on from when the government first adopted the idea. The new body known as the Equality and Human Rights Commission, will take over the work of the Equal Opportunities Commission, Commission for Racial Equality and the Disability Rights Commission in 2006. Sports participation and ethnicity in England: a national survey 1999/2000
This study provides robust statistical data on the levels and patterns of sporting participation among ethnic minority groups in England. It provides analysis of the levels of participation by eight different ethnic minority groups and compares these with the equivalent results for the population as a whole.
