Eligibility

Who can to apply?
At this stage, we are keen to hear from any organisation in the UK that is interested though we can’t make any undertakings at this stage of how the assets will be distributed.

Will there be an equitable distribution of facilities/equipment etc across the country (i.e. between the regions) if demand exceeds supply?
Yes, we will be aiming to achieve an equitable distribution so that people across the country will benefit from new and improved sports facilities.

What assessment criteria will we be up against if we want to apply?
In the event of significant interest our current proposals for the selection criteria are as follows:

  • Projected impact on increasing community sport both for adults and children/ young people and in particular priority groups
  • Projected impact on elite sport
  • Contribution to wider Government priorities
  • Commercial sector use
  • Fit with other local sports provision (public and private)
  • Financial contribution
  • Capability to commission and operate the venue

Do I have to use it as a basketball/fencing/badminton hall?
These venues may themselves to a flexible mixed use sporting facility. Predicted usage post Games would need to be identified on the ‘Expressions of Interest’ form.
Does it have to be used as a sporting venue?
Our primary focus is to leave a lasting sporting legacy, so priority will be given to expressions of interest that maintain sporting use.

Financial

What are the cost implications if my organisation is interested in a facility?
A number of criteria will be taken into account in assessing potential end users of the venues, including their potential financial contributions for purchasing these assets. You will also need to consider the costs of physical relocation, re-erection, commissioning, standard insurance, maintenance, operating costs and potential legal costs of preparing the transfer agreements and other legal documents. We are working to make the relocation process as simple and cost-effective as possible.

Are there any figures for guidance as to what this cost might be?
This information is not currently available as the designing of the venues is not yet underway. The designs will aim to minimise relocation and future running costs.

Will there be any grants from Sport England/Government/any other bodies to which I can apply to help meet my costs?
It will not be possible for either Olympic Delivery Authority or Sport England to fund these costs and it will be highly unlikely that there will be funding from central government funds. Potential end users will be required at a later date to demonstrate that they are able to commission and use any assets.

Timing

Why is Sport England making enquires now, with the Games not until 2012?
2012 is only five years away and we need to start planning now. We’re keen at this stage to get an idea of the type and scale of sporting demand for these assets to help inform the Olympic Delivery Authority’s procurement process.

What are the timescales for expressions of interest and subsequent contract negotiation?
We are currently gathering initial expressions of interest but this is just the first stage of the process to establish likely demand. The process of contracting with end-users will be established in the lead up to the 2012 Games

Logistical

Is it acceptable for an organisation to express an interest without planning permission for the relocation of a particular facility?
Yes, at this stage of the process

Will the facilities be all inclusive (i.e. does it come with flooring, seating etc) or can they be split up?
Yes they can be all inclusive and yes they can be split up. Please use the form to detail the venues and/or assets your are interested in.

How soon after 2012 can I get the venue?
The decommissioning and possible relocation of venues following the London 2012 Games is in the early stages of its planning, although it is unlikely to be before the first quarter of 2013.

Contractual

As we are still five years out, I may find myself in a different situation come the autumn of 2012 – at what point may I as an interested party, have to sign a contract?
At this early stage of the process, we’re keen to hear from any organisation that may be interested though we can’t make any commitments about how the facilities will be distributed. We’re not asking anyone to commit to signing contracts.

Can I apply as part of a consortium?
Yes, we’re interested in hearing from any organisation or consortium of organisations potentially interested in the facilities.

Miscellaneous

How definite is the list of sporting venues and assets?
The schedule of sporting venues and assets will inevitably be subject to change & is currently based upon a pre-design phase assessment.

What about the sports equipment - how can I apply for that?
More information about the type and amount of sporting equipment that will be available after the Games will be known next year.
