Busy Bees mix it at Sutton

A ground-breaking community centre in Sutton provides the community of Roundshaw with a wide mix of sport, social and cultural opportunities.

Sport England invested £1.47m of Lottery funding towards the £6.1m it cost to build the Phoenix Centre which now offers a safe, family environment offering fun courses and activities for all ages and interests

This innovative and exciting community facility was opened in September 2004 and provides something for everyone in the way of sport, fitness and recreational opportunities for all ages.

Facilities include a four badminton court size sports hall, health and dance studio, library, IT centre, youth zone and radio studios, community halls, sensory room, crèche and community police office.

It also boasts the Beehive café, which is run by local residents and provides somewhere for visitors to relax after a session in the gym or a browse in the library.

Phoenix Centre factfile

  • 31,624 newcomers have visited the centre since it opened helping Sport England towards its target of increasing participation by 1% a year up to 2020
  • 10 full time and 9 part time jobs have been created at this community hub
  • Coaching hours for Under 18s have reached 18
  • There are nine adult coaching hours
  • 30 members of the sports club are over 50 years old
  • 262 females and 168 males are members of the impressive gym
