Wolves wowed by new look Aldersley
Wolverhampton Wanderers young soccer stars of the future are among those taking advantage of the re-developed Aldersley Leisure Village in the West Midlands.
The youngsters from Wolves Academy have joined more than 200,000 people a year who use the superb facility which is helping Sport England towards its targets of increasing participation by 1% a year up to 2020.
Over £3.9m of Lottery funding was invested by Sport England in the £7m scheme which set out to provide a sport leisure ‘village’ for the Wolverhampton City Challenge area and to increase the usage of the facility by young people and the local community.
The redeveloped leisure ‘village’ includes the Arena indoor facilities for badminton, 5 a side football, basketball, table tennis, indoor bowls and the Fitness Junction fitness suite. Outdoor facilities include floodlit Astroturf pitches for football and hockey, floodlit tennis courts, floodlit netball courts, grass football pitches, athletics track and cycle velodrome. There is also an aerobics dance studio, Pickens bar and conference and training facilities.
The impressive ‘village’ regularly hosts national and regional championships as well as local events.

- There are opportunities for all the community to participate in over 20 sports, catering for all ages and abilities
- 11 sports clubs covering cycling, football, hockey, netball, tennis and athletics regularly use the village
- 13 new jobs have been created as a result of this facility
- Aldersley provides a regional training base for athletics
- Coaching hours for the under 18 age group have increased to 47 each week
- There are now 130 coaches operating at this multi-sport hub
