As such, we have decided to pause our Major Events Engagement Fund so that we can make sure any future funding is fully integrated into, and supports, our new strategy and priorities.
In a unique collaboration, Sport England and UK Sport launched a new fund to help ensure a long term legacy of major international sporting events in this country.
Sport England’s £2m Major Events Engagement fund builds on the existing £27m of National Lottery funding that is invested into bidding for and staging major sporting events via UK Sport’s Gold Event Series.
London 2012 showed world class events hosted in England can inspire and have a positive impact on both perceptions and participation in sport. Currently over 15.6 million people play sport once a week, every week – over 1.6 million more than when London won the bid to host the 2012 Games.
The Fund is designed to invest in projects to strengthen and ultimately increase participation in sports by enhancing the engagement national governing bodies (NGBs) have with local communities when they are hosting major international sporting events in England.
To date, we have supported nearly 20 sports and attracted an additional £500,000 of investment from partners for engagement programmes around the ‘Gold Event Series’ through the Major Events Engagement Fund.
