The Sports facilities calculator has been used in a variety of
contexts, from individual development schemes, to major urban
extensions, including master plans and supplementary planning
documentns.
Listed below are a number of these examples where the Sports
Facilities Calculator has been used to help identify new,and
future, demand for facilities created by new development.
British Paper Board and Corys Wharf sites, Thurrock
District
1,500 dwellings are to be accommodated on two adjoining former
industrial sites. £1m secured towards the provision of new sports
facilities to meet the additional demand created by the new
housing. SFC used to quanitfying new recreational demand created by
the develpoment.
Cranfield, Bedfordshire
This is an extension to a village of 450 dwellings which is
awaiting the outcome of the public inquiry held January 2006. The
developer has agreed to provide one indoor court as part of
community hall development. SFC used to qualitify need for indoor
sports facilities.
Master Plan, North Stowe
South Cambridgeshire District is taking a proactive approach
towards sports provision within the Cambridgeshie growth area. A
study of strategic sports and recreation needs for the sub-region
has been commissioned by Cambridgeshire Horizons and has used the
SFC to help quantify the additional recreational demand of the new
settlement.
SEEDA - Guidance for large scale housing developments
Briefing notes have been developed by Sport England South East
for SEEDA to take account of provision required on large scale
development sites. The note provides information to enable the user
to estimate demand for sports provision using the Sports Facility
Calculator.
To-date they have been prepared for three sites:
- 'Woolston Riverside' on Southampton - the site of the old
Vosper Thornycroft shipyard;
- proposed redevelopment of the East Cowes waterfront on the Isle
of Wight; and
- Thames Gateway North Kent
West Midlands Reagional Strategy
As part of the revision of the West Midlands Regional Strategy,
the Regional Assembly is considering the infrastructure
implications of three housing options. These are:
- A continuation of current trends in population;
- An increase of 25% above the current trend; and
- An increase of 51% above current levels.
The SFC regional figure has been used to establish the cost of
swimming pools, sports halls and indoor bowls facilities for these
three scenarios.
South East Plan
The Infrastructure Plan for the draft Regional Spatial Strategy
makes use of the SFC to establish the needs for sports halls and
swimming pools given the adopted growth figure of 28,900 new
dwelling per year. Figures are given for the region as a whole and
for nine sub-regional areas.
Supplementary Planning Documents
The Sport Facility Calculator has also been used in the
