
This guidance covers the construction and
maintenance of safe and sustainable natural turf surfaces as a
fundamental prerequisite for the safety and enjoyment of
participants of sport from the community level through to the
professional game.
Natural Turf for Sport includes design guidance, standard pitch
layouts, standard construction specifications and access to cost
guidance. The aim of this guidance is to:
- Increase awareness of good design in natural turf sports
facilities.
- Help consultants, clients, user representatives and other
stakeholders to follow best practice.
- Encourage the development of well designed safe and sustainable
pitches that meet the needs of sports and are a pleasure to
use.
This design guide, originally published in 2000 represents a
major update taking into account current best practice. It
incorporates advice grained through detailed consultation with
national governing bodies for sport (
NGBs
), primary advisory groups,
sports turf specialists, and contractor associations.
This checklist provides standard sizes (minimum/maximum) for
indoor and outdoor courts and pitches, associated run-off margins
and links to the National Governing Bodies for Sport.

AutoCAD (2004 dwg format) downloadable plan drawing layouts of
natural turf pitches for various sports are available in relation
to the diagrams shown in the natural turf design guidance note. In
addition, Adobe Reader (pdf) versions of the CAD drawings are also
available to download.
