South Holland Sports Tour
South Holland’s successful Summer Sports Tour is going to be even bigger next year after funding was secured to extend the scheme to adults. This year over 3,000 young people in the Lincolnshire district sampled a variety of sports including tennis, football, triathlon, and kick-boxing.

Brochures delivered to all schools secured mass interest in sports participation with classes run at pocket money prices.

Dan Matson, the district council sports development officer said:

“We are now launching an Easter sports tour as well as the summer one,” said Dan. “And next year we are going to have sports activities for the 18 to 55s and for people aged 55 and over.”

The tour would not have been possible without the enthusiastic support of sporting clubs throughout the district  – and some are reaping big rewards in terms of boosted membership.

Gedney Hill Golf Club had more than 100 youngsters playing there by the half-way stage of the tour and many of the children are keen to carry on playing at the club.

And the children have been so enthusiastic about the sport that their mums and dads have been signing up for lessons too.

Another sport getting high attendance was short mat bowls at Sutton St Edmunds – more than 70 youngsters had a go during the first half of the tour alone.

Spalding Squash Club had more than 400 youngsters take part in their sessions and, as a result, received an accreditation from the England Squash Association.

South Holland Sports Tour 2007 was sponsored by Broadgate Homes and the company is also going to back the larger event next year.
