Athletes using Saffron Lane Sports Centre in Leicester will be able to enjoy running on a new track next season thanks to a £393,000 refurbishment.
Funded by Leicester City Council and Sport England the scheme includes a new track surface, improvements to the pole vault runway, new drainage and other surface repairs. It will mean the track will meet specifications for the International Athletics Association Federation.
The funding from the Sport England Lottery Fund is part of £5 million for an extensive refurbishment programme of outdoor athletics facilities in England. Through the Community Athletics Refurbishment programme, 137 all weather athletics facilities across England were eligible to apply for funding to improve existing facilities.
Cllr John Mugglestone, Cabinet lead for regeneration and culture said: “ I am delighted that we are able to carry out this work. In the run up to the 2012 Olympics in London, there will be increasing interest in athletics and we need to be able to offer local people facilities to try out some of these sports for themselves”.
Paul Edwards, head of sports services said: “This re-affirms the council’s commitment to provide first class opportunities for young athletes and hopefully deliver to their 2012 aspirations”.
Refurbishment work is due to be complete by November. |
