Grant to hockey club leads to England call up
David Overton, 14, from Leadenham, Lincs has been called up to the England Under 16 hockey team just three years since he started playing. A grant from Awards for All got his local club off the ground and now David has a promising international career.
Sally Cade of Leadenham Hockey Club commented: “David’s natural aptitude and potential in goal were immediately obvious after his first game. We entered a mini hockey tournament where he was spotted by county coaches and quickly picked up by Normanby Park's youth section.”
The Leadenham club started out playing on astro turf at the local tennis club. Since then a Sport England Awards for All grant has seen the club grow to over 100 active members using the new facilities between 5 and 10pm every evening.
Cade added: “David's success would not have happened without the support and guidance that the county sports partnership gave us when setting up the Leadenham club.”
Steve De Wint of Lincolnshire Sports Partnership commented: “Completing grant aid forms can be a bit daunting, but we are able to provide guidance on this. We’ve reached a significant milestone recently; with over 100 new clubs have been set up in Lincolnshire as a direct result of receiving Sport England funding.
Anne Rippon of Sport England East Midlands commented: “We are delighted to hear about David’s achievement. Our role is to help establish the pathways from grass roots sport to elite performance, as well as increase participation in physical activity. This is an excellent example of how that has been achieved in Lincolnshire.”
Grants of between £300 and £10,000 are available for people to take part in art, sport, heritage and community activities, and projects that promote education, the environment and health in the local community.
