Over 50 athletes either from or based in the East Midlands were selected by Team England to compete at the XVIII Commonwealth Games, in Melbourne.

Swimmers claim impressive medal haul
The region's swimmers won a total of 18 medals at the Games. Highlights include:
Mel Marshall from Boston who equalled the Team England record for the number of medals won at a single Games when she won silver in the 4x100m medley relay – her sixth medal of the Games.
Caitlin McClatchey from Northampton won two gold medals for Scotland in the 200 and 400 metres freestyle.
Derby's Ross Davenport also claimed a golden double, in the 200 metres freestyle, men's 4 x 200 metres freestyle relay, and silver in the 4x100m medley relay.

Nathan leads badminton team with Gold and Silver
Nottingham's Nathan Robertson and partner Gail Emms won the badminton mixed doubles gold, beating New Zealand's Daniel Shirley and Sara Runesten Petersen 21-17 21-10.
Nathan also won a silver in the team event, along with fellow regional badminton players Robert Blair, Anthony Clark and Donna Kellogg.
Donna Kellogg won a bronze medal, with Gail Emms, in the Women's Doubles, and Robert Blair and Anthony Clark also took bronze in the Men's Doubles, taking the region's badminton medal tally to four.

Lisa claims surprise Gold
Loughborough based athlete Lisa Dobriskey put in a spectacular performance to claim a surprise Gold medal in the women’s 1,500m. Lisa finished in 4:06.21 ahead of Sarah Jamieson of Australia with Hayley Tullett third.
Lisa said "I just wanted to make the final, I knew I had a chance to do well but never in a million years thought I'd win the gold."
Other athletics medals included Kim Wall in the women's 4 x 100 metres relay, Liz Yelling in the marathon, Steven Lewis in the pole vault and Andy Turner in the 110 metres hurdles.

Silver and Bronze medal for Becky
Team England’s youngest competitor, fourteen-year-old Becky Downie, won a silver medal in the women’s team event and won a bronze in the women’s individual apparatus balance beam final.
Becky said, “I was really pleased to get a silver in the team event, especially with a team member missing, but to win a bronze tonight in an individual event is something very special.”
For the Nottingham schoolgirl tonight was what dreams were made of, and a stark contrast to how she would normally spend her Tuesday evenings.
“On a Tuesday night, if I wasn’t training, I would just be doing my home work or watching television, but tonight I am at the Commonwealth Games winning a medal. I can’t believe it”, she said.

Region's athletes win team medals
The East Midlands was well represented in the team events. Tom Varndell of Leicester Tigers and Andy Vilk from Northampton Saints helped England to take silver in the rugby 7's
Leicester Ladies provided four members of the women's hockey squad that picked up the bronze medal following a dramatic penalty shoot out against New Zealand.
Four members of the Loughborough Lightning netball team also won bronze, as England pipped Jamaica 53-52.
The England men's and women's basketball teams finished third, leading to Leicester Riders Steve Bucknall and Nottingham Wildcats Jo Sargant both winning bronze medals.
