Lincolnshire receives £1m boost

Lottery funding of over £1 million has paid for three sports projects recently launched in Lincolnshire.

Two multi activity community areas and an extreme sports park have all received funding allocated by Sport England through the Active England initiative.

Active England is an investment programme from Big Lottery Fund and Sport England to increase grassroots participation in sport and physical activity.

X-site, an extreme sports park in Skegness, received £625,438 towards its £1.3m cost.

The sports park offers facilities for skateboarding, inline skating and stunt biking as well as after school and holiday clubs at a low cost.

It has already attracted over 1,500 users since its launch less than a month ago and is set to host the qualifying rounds of the NASS skateboard competition – a high profile national competition – in June.

Centre Manager Nick Bray said: “This park is allowing many young people to do the sports they love in a controlled environment.

“Also, lots of parents have been getting involved because they have seen how extreme sports can help you stay fit and active. The sports are technical and very strenuous so they’re a great way of keeping your mind and body active.”

The multi activity community games areas (MACAs) have been built in Louth and Sutton on Sea and received  £205k and £300k respectively.

Both offer a versatile open space where a number of activities can take place including five-a-side floodlit football, tennis, cricket, basketball and endurance training. Facilities are free during the day and open for bookings only in the evening.

The
Active England funding has supplied the MACAs with a revenue support grant to fund leisure and play officers who are responsible for promoting the sites, meeting with community groups and managing a coaching budget.

The leisure and play officers are also expected to start and develop sports clubs in the area to meet the demands of the community.

John Medler, Senior Community Sports Development Officer at East Lindsey District Council said: “This games area has provided the whole community with a new opportunity to get into activity.

“The revenue support we have received from Sport England has also generated new coaching opportunities which is fantastic.”

Anne Rippon, Interim Director of Sport England East Midlands, said: “It’s important to offer a wide range of facilities to make it easier and more appealing for people to get active.

“It’s important for us to offer opportunities for everybody if we are to continue making England an active and successful sporting nation.”
