Sport England has announced that more than 1,000 projects – over three times as many anticipated at the start of the scheme – have benefited from the Community Club Development Programme (CCDP).
CCDP is a collaboration between Sport England, the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, and National Governing Bodies of Sport (NGBs). The programme assists NGBs to identify capital projects for investment. They then work in partnership with Sport England to ensure the projects are delivered.
Following its success, the programme has been extended for a further two years with an additional £40 million of funding and now includes three new sports: boxing, golf and squash.
In the East Midlands 85 clubs has received funding, a totalling £6,810,997 of investment, including the following clubs:
- Draycott & Long Eaton Table Tennis Club (Borrowash, Derby) awarded £395,223 towards a new built table tennis hall. This Advanced Level club has been in existence since 1988 and have endured a nomadic existence based on the difficulties in securing sufficient access to facilities. Despite these problems the club has experienced many successes, especially at junior level.
- Northampton Association of Youth Clubs on behalf of Northamptonshire Trampoline Gymnastics Academy received a grant of £445,110 towards a purpose built trampoline gymnastics facility. The Academy (Northamptonshire Trampoline Gymnastics Academy) is made up of 4 trampoline clubs, 2 of which currently run from this facility and 2 in local schools. The Academy has adopted a good sporting ethos and development plans centring on increasing participation through widening access.
- Mansfield Lawn Tennis Club received a grant of £31,500 towards floodlighting for three courts. The club is Mini Tennis Accredited, but has been restricted from fulfilling its development targets in winter months due to the lack of floodlights. The nearest floodlight tennis facility was 25 minutes drive time away prior to this grant and therefore this investment was of strategic importance to the development of tennis in the area.
- Mowbray Rangers Football Club in Asfordby, near Melton Mowbray received a £247,238 grant, via the Football Foundation for a brand new clubhouse, housing eight state of the art changing rooms for both male and female players and match officials, alongside social areas and spectator facilities. The new building replaced a dilapidated 1950’s cricket pavilion to provide young footballers with more opportunities to play the national game.
- Lindum Cricket Club, based near Lincoln received a grant of £13,000 to upgrade their cricket square, including re laying 10 new wickets at Lindum sports ground and to install an underground irrigation system.
Richard Caborn, Minister for Sport, said: "The Community Club Development Programme has been a true success and demonstrates the pivotal role that good quality sports provision has for East Midlands communities. Not only is it vital for the support and development of young talent beyond the school grounds, it is also key to getting people active and tackling obesity.
Originally 16 National Governing Bodies benefited from this programme including: badminton, basketball, canoeing, cricket, cycling, football, gymnastics, hockey, judo, netball, rowing, rugby league, rugby union, table tennis, tennis and swimming. Boxing, golf and squash were added to the programme from 2006-2008.
