Nominations for BBC East Midlands Sports Awards announced  

The finalists have been announced for the BBC East Midlands Sports Awards 2005.

The winners will be revealed at a glittering ceremony supported by Sport England East Midlands and the East Midlands Development Agency. Hosted by BBC Sport’s John Inverdale, the event takes place at the De Montfort Hall in Leicester on Monday 5th December.

Mark Shardlow, BBC East Midlands Sports Awards Manager, says: “The standard of entries we received was outstanding, which has made it extremely tough for the judges! The awards ceremony promises to be an evening to remember.”

The event is being covered live on BBC radio stations in the region with a special programme from 6pm to 10pm.

The nominations are:

BBC East Midlands Sports Personality of the Year

Dean Barrick

Dean Barrick
Manager of non league football team Hucknall Town who made the final of the FA Trophy

Martin Corry

Martin Corry
Rugby player who became the captain of Leicester Tigers and the England national squad

Northamptonshire biker who became the first woman to make a podium finish at the Isle of Man TT
Ellen MacArthur Ellen MacArthur
Derbyshire yachtswoman who broke the record for sailing solo around the world

You can vote for the BBC East Midlands Sports Personality of the Year by calling 09011 11 57 57. Calls cost 25p and lines close at 0900 on Friday 2nd December.

By voting you will go into a draw to win a VIP night out for two at the BBC East Midlands Sports Awards.

You will need a password to vote… and the password is the name of the famous old cricket trophy which England won by beating Australia in the summer.

Sportsman of the Year

  • William Asher, Lincolnshire – water ski
  • Martin Corry, Leicestershire – rugby union
  • Shaun Murphy, Northamptonshire – snooker

Disabled Sportsman of the Year

  • Alan Crowther Derbyshire – rowing
  • James Crisp, Nottinghamshire – swimming
  • Jayant Mistry, Leicestershire – tennis

Disabled Sportswoman of the Year

  • Sarah Dunster, Nottinghamshire – athletics
  • Rachael Jarvis, Leicestershire – basketball
  • Sally Wager, Northamptonshire – wheelchair basketball

Coach/Manager of the Year

  • Richard Bates, Lincolnshire – cricket

A team of BBC sports journalists, members of the County Sports Partnerships and senior figures from Sport England East Midlands and the East Midlands Development agency formed the judging panels.

The shortlists do not include The Lady Taverners’ Awards for Junior Disability Sport, the Lifetime Achievement Award, and East Midlands Development Agency Enterprise in Sport Award.
