BBC East Midlands Sports Awards  


The winners of BBC East Midlands Sports Awards 2006 have been announced at a glittering ceremony at the Assembly Rooms in Derby (Monday 27th November 2006). The event, sponsored by Sport England East Midlands, beamed live pictures worldwide in a TV webcast. John Inverdale and a team of celebrity guest presenters announced the following winners:

Colin Calderwood

Colin Calderwood, the Nottingham Forest manager, won the football achievement award for gaining promotion with Northampton Town and taking Nottingham Forest to the top of League One.

Becky Downie

Becky Downie, from Nottingham, was named Junior Sportswoman of the Year. The 14 year old gymnast was the youngest member of the England team at the Commonwealth Games and won a silver and bronze medal.

Gavin Evans

Gavin Evans, from South Muskham Nottinghamshire, is the Junior Sportsman of the Year. The 13 year old table tennis player is the best in his age group in Europe.

Mandy Young

Mandy Young, from Corby, won the emda Enterprise in Sport Award. She’s spent four years bringing together local businesses, local authorities and local youths to form Adrenaline Alley – one of the UK’s most innovative and best Urban Sports Centres for skateboarding and bikes.

Sally Reddin

Sally Reddin, from Lincolnshire, won the Disabled Sportswoman of the Year Award. The 59 year old is the oldest member of Britain’s Paralympics team – but she’s still winning medals.

Richard Whitehead

Richard Whitehead, from Nottingham, was named Disabled Sportsman of the Year. He competed for Great Britain in the winter Olympics in Sledge Hockey.  He’s run ultra marathons and marathons and he’s played for his county at cricket.

Andy Wood

Andy Wood, from Derbyshire, is Coach of the Year. Andy coaches the doubles teams for Great Britain badminton. In the last 12 months he has coached his players to gold medals in the World Championships, the Commonwealth Games and the European Championships.

James Coyle-King

James Coyle-King, from Lincoln, won the Lady Taverners’ Award for Junior Disability Sport. The 15 year old was presented a cheque for five hundred pounds to be split between Dwarf Athletics and Jaguars Wheelchair Basketball Club. He’s had a string of exceptional performance in a wide range of sports.

Tracy Whittaker Smith

Tracy Whittaker-Smith, from Northampton, was named Sport England East Midlands’ Community Coach of the Year. She has coached two athletes to the European finals in trampoline gymnastics; won four national titles and she continues to develop an academy with an imminent move to a new centre.

Caitlin McClatchey

Caitlin McClatchey, from Northampton, celebrates her 21st birthday this week with the Sportswoman of the Year trophy. Caitlin had outstanding swims at the Commonwealth Games and European Championships.

Nathan Robertson and Gail Emms

Nathan Robertson, from Nottinghamshire, was named Sportsman of the Year after winning Gold medals at the World Badminton championships and the Commonwealth Games.

Lisa Dobriskey

Lisa Dobriskey, based at Loughborough University, won the Brian Clough Breakthrough Award.  The promising athlete announced her potential with a surprise gold medal in the 1500m at the Commonwealth Games.

Leicester Ladies Hockey

Leicester Ladies Hockey Team is Team of the Year. They won the League and Super Cup for the second successive year and won the bronze medal in the European Cup Winners Cup.


Ross Davenport

Ross Davenport, from Belper near Derby, was voted Sports Personality of the Year by viewers and listeners to BBC Local Radio in the East Midlands and East Midlands Today.  He swam to two gold medals and one silver medal at the Commonwealth Games.

Tanvir Akram

Tanvir Akram, from Derby, topped the field in the BBC East Midlands Unsung Hero supported by Tesco.  His award was for the work he’s done to help teenagers in inner city Derby. Tanvir will now be a guest at the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Awards on Sunday December 10th to contest the national title.



Gordon Banks

Gordon Banks, former Chesterfield and Leicester City goalkeeper, was given a Lifetime Achievement Award. Gordon played for the England team that won the World Cup in 1966. While at Leicester City he played in two FA cup finals and two League Cup finals.
