Tour of Britain East Midlands news

Derbyshire rider signs up for Tour
Derbyshire cyclist Robin Sharman will take part in the prestigious Tour of Britain from 30 August to 4 September including a stage through his home county on Friday 2 September.

Twenty four-year-old Sharman joined top British team Recycling.co.uk last year after two years competing in France and has rapidly established himself as a formidable competitor. He won eight road races for Recycling.co.uk, including the esteemed Lincoln GP Premier Calendar race last year, and is always a contender in sprint finishes.

The Repton rider is keen to build on this success with a good showing in this year’s Tour of Britain and said: “It’s all I’m thinking about right now.

“This will be the biggest event I have ever ridden so I’ll be doing my best to get up there for the individual stages and see where it goes from there.

“I’m in good form at the moment so I’m confident.”

The East Midlands stage, sponsored by East Midlands Development Agency (emda), gives Sharman the opportunity to ride through his county and he will be trying extra hard in front of his home crowd.

He added: “Having grown up in Derbyshire I am particularly keen to do well in the East Midlands stage.

Why you should get on your bike

  • It is affordable, fun and environmentally friendly
  • It is a great way to increase your fitness levels
  • According to the British Heart Foundation cycling just four miles a day for five days a week reduces your chance of getting heart disease by 50%.
  • Starting the day with a ride to school or work makes you more alert, confident, able to deal with stress and make decisions.
  • Getting children onto bicycles is a good way of preventing childhood obesity.
  • Cycling allows you to see more of the world - parking a bike is so much easier than parking a car you can stop pretty much whenever, wherever you want.

If you haven’t ridden a bike for many years or are starting to learn for the first time there is plenty of help and advice available to help you on your way. For further information go to the Bike for All web site.
