What is our target?
The ambition is to increase and sustain participation in sport across 158,850 people aged 16+ by 2012.
Why have participation targets?
Partly because we can, as we now have a robust baseline through the Active People Survey. But principally because we need to be able to illustrate how we are contributing to Sport England’s ambition to increase and sustain participation in sport across 2 million people by 2012. We also need to illustrate to our partners that investment they make is making a real difference to our communities. The best way of doing this is to ensure that everyone working to develop the Delivery System for Community Sport is clear about what their role is and the level of participation they are responsible for achieving.
Who are we targeting?
Sport England is the lead organisation responsible for the success of DCMS PSA 3 – increase participation in sport and active recreation by 3% by 2008 in priority groups 16+.
The PSA Target refers to ‘priority groups’ which account for some 76% of the population. Priority groups are defined as:
- Those people with a physical or mental disability i.e. defined by themselves as having any long-standing illness, disability or infirmity that limits their activities in any way.
- Those people from black or minority ethnic groups i.e. defined by themselves as Asian or British Asian (Indian, Pakistani & Bangladeshi, other Asian Background); Black or British Black (Black Caribbean, Black African, other Black Background); mixed ethnicity; and other ethnic groups, including Chinese.
- Those people in socio-economic groups C2, D and E i.e. defined by themselves as being in lower-socio-economic groups using the National Statistics Socio-Economic Classification (categories 5-8).
- Women
